Meet the Bloggers: Geek Out New York

by Tim Malbon on 17 October 2008

Can’t remember who said ,”The geek shall inherit the earth”, but I’m pretty sure those aren’t the *actual* words that appear in The Good Book.

Things we are sure about: there are vast hordes of geeks living in New York and London. They are geek magnets. Look at the number of bloggers, start-ups and online communities coming out of these two cities. Look at the number of Flickr groups, twitter-ers and enormous facebook networks in both cities. We are WIRED people. It’s like a real Telectroscope. And that’s why we were brimming over with geek excitement to meet John Teti, author of the most excellent blog Geek Out New York.

By day, John is a TV comedy writer (as well as doing stand-up on the side) and he is wry. It comes through in his exploratory enounters with the geekier underbelly of New York: cool things to go and see and do – for example, a review of NYC’s Robot Village shop, or the Untethered exhibition (back in September) that featured objects “deprogrammed of their original function” including a photocopier that takes in the night sky and a “piano that plays the Internet”. Cool. Most of these recommendations come in a series called ‘Do Something This Weekend’.

Geek meets gadget. Joy.

Geek meets gadget. Joy.

John set his blog up to address the problem that despite New York’s great geek culture, no-one was blogging about it. Food, yes. Geeks… not much. As John put it “New York had to represent.”

We asked John the by now familiar questions…

Metrotwin: What do you love most about New York?

John: From a geek perspective it’s skepticism. Tech has to prove itself in NYC – we don’t get as easily caught up in fads [as they do on the West Coast]

Metrotwin: What’s your favorite place in New York?

John: Robot Village

Metrotwin: What would you recommend to a first-timer geek?

John: The St Mark’s Place area – it’s a really interesting mix of cultures: there’s a Japanese flavor, a comics culture and it doesn’t get any attention.

Hear that geek-people? Get over to St Mark’s, and if you find yourself in need of a robot whilst visiting the city look no further than Robot Village. I hope John will add Robot Village to the site for us. That’s Robot Village. Robot Village. Geek Out!
