OPTIMISM
by Harper on 2 December 2009It’s the little things that count, right? For better or for worse. A small nudge by a fellow strap-hanger can leave you bruised for the day, while a compliment from a passerby can set your heart a-flutter. New York City is one compounded city. We are up against one another all day long. New Yorkers are born fending for themselves. That is why, when something purely sweet and calming, inspiring or charming occurs amidst the rubble, one can’t help but pause. Especially in the New York Subway System.
Most recently, artist Reed Seifer has made a small statement, on a small city tool, that whispers loud enough to impact your psyche. For the better. Mr. Seifer is offering a positive mantra to commuters who take a moment to pause and look at their metrocard. For those who serendipitously get one of his Metrocards, one will find the simple, frank yet surprisingly inspirational word: “optimisim.”
These are important lessons. In a city fueled by overwhelming qualities, sometimes the smallest, most unjaded statements can make for meditative breath.
