New Years Eve Dilemmas
by Anya Driscoll on 29 December 2009I bet, dear Metrotwinners, that like me, the guy next to you and basically everyone in the city who isn’t smug enough to own a cottage/logcabin in the country, you are still wondering what to do this coming New Year’s Eve. To help you come to a decision, I have helpfully outlined the pros and cons of various typical New Years destinations.
Outdoor gatherings
New Yorkers have Times Square , where, besides the infamous ball dropping, there will be musical performances, confettiand fireworks, whilst Londoners can gather by the London Eye for a free fireworks display.
Pros: Sense of community, costs next to nothing, you might get on the telly.
Cons: Sense of being crushed to death by crowds, the high liklihood of rubbish wet weather, the difficulty in procuring alcohol once hipflask has run out.

Big Clubs
15,000 revellers will be raving it up big style for Ministry of Sound Live at the O2 Arena in London whilst DJ legend Paul Van Dyk will be doing his thing at the Roseland Ballroom in New York.
Pros: Assured banging tunes, no chance of things petering out by 1am, a chance to dance like an idiot
Cons: Assured high cost to get in, no chance of getting to the bar before 1am, a chance to lose all your friends and see in the new year surrounded by idiots.
Black and White Balls
In New York ‘Canada’s biggest R&B star’ Debora Cox will be hosting a Black and White ball at the Chelsea Art Museum. Meh? The ticket price includes a free vodka bar, champagne, drag act Shequida hosting the countdown and two dancefloors. Not so meh. London’s Beach Blanket Babylon are also hosting a Black and White ball, albeit a Art Nouveau inspired bash with the option of a sit down dinner and champagne.
Pros: Well organised fun, higher chance of getting lucky, a select crowd.
Cons: Let’s face it, you’re either going to look like a goth, P Diddy or a penguin.
Houseparty
Everyone over to ours/yours/that bloke down the streets!
Pros: Cheap, cheap and cheap. And you get to inspect someone else’s medicine cabinet and criticise their livingroom art.
Cons: Inviting ‘close friends only’ could end up being you and your flatmate’s mate sitting around the telly or you could get gatecrashers and end up seeing in the new year shrieking at a group of teenagers who are trying to steal your bathroom fittings.
Bar
Well, basically every bar will be having a NYE bash, so it seems unfair to list two here.
Pros: A good amount of people, alcohol on tap, warm.
Cons: A good amount of boring people you can’t escape from, high probability of crashing out after 9pm tequila shots and the constant dotting in and out from sweaty pub to freezing outside smoking area WILL give you a cold.
Ignoring the Whole Thing and Going to Bed
You loser.

You forgot underground/independent parties. That’s what everyone we know does, both in NYC and London. We hosted a speakeasy Bootleggers’ Ball for 600 costumed guests, for example.
