Love Yo Momma
by Anya Driscoll on 7 May 2010In the UK, Mothering Sunday falls in March, but in the US, it’s this weekend.
Basically, while hundreds of Londoners are probably just inching themselves back into their mums’ good books/basking in the fast fading glow of an aura of ‘worthy progeny’ , New Yorkers have this weekend to mend or fray that loving bond that exists between mother and child.
Never fear! Metrotwin is here to help with some no-fail suggestions to celebrate the (older) woman in your life.
Spa day
Make sure Mothering Sunday lasts a whole day and not just the time it takes to pick up the phone and be lectured on your diet, by booking your dear old Ma a day trip to a luxury New York spa. She’ll come out so relaxed she won’t so much as raise an eyebrow when you’re twenty minutes late to pick her up, explaining through a mouthful of burger that you’re just finishing off your breakfast.
Dining Out
A nice way to treat your Mum (and yourself at the same time!) is to suggest a dinner on the town. You could seriously push the boat out, maybe try a nice steakhouse, perhaps some fresh seafood, or just have a nice chilled out meal in an Italian restaurant.
Box of Chocolates
Maybe you live too far away to do dinner. No matter! It’s the thought that counts after all, and rather than get all risky with odd items that look super cool on the Shopping Channel but like the dusty cupboard fodder of tomorrow in real life, why not fall back on that old classic – the box of chocolates? Oh, but like, nice, yeah? None of that drugstore stuff.
Afternoon Tea
This is a good choice, because unless your mother is one of those incredible monied Upper East Side sorts who dresses head to toe in Chanel tweet and who has never been seen in public without her pearls on since 1972, afternoon tea at a nice hotel will be a rare treat. And if she is? Well, lucky you, Nate Archibald.
Be There
For many moms, accustomed as they are to low expectations and recession-hit offspring, just the fact that you have a) remembered and b) are there, is often enough. But hey, the weather is supposed to be great this weekend, so why not just go on a nice walk?
